In 1971 when the Plymouth 340 came out, it was widely regarded as an affordable, family starter car.
"You could buy it brand new for $3200 dollars," says Mike Merrell, a Duster owner. "That's why they used to be called 'economy cars.'"

Unfortunately, because the cars were so inexpensive most owners got rid of their Dusters after a few years. Today, nearly 40 years later, owners like Merrell proudly showcase these former "economy cars."

While Merrell has made some changes to the engine (340 ci, Holley 650 Double pump), aesthetically he has tried to maintain the same look it had in 1971.

"If you looked at it, it looks original," he says, pointing to the engine, "but you know there's something a little different."

The differences include a larger, heavy load cam and a 202 intake. Like other cars of the era, the Plymouth 340 doesn't handle particularly well, but it loves to go fast in a straight line.

As for the exterior, Merrell choose to paint the car "Lemon Twist" yellow with black trim, put in dual snorkel hood scoop, a truck mounted Go-wing, and 17X7" A.R. Vintage "Hoopster" rims. He also added a shark tooth grill that, while admittedly a pain to clean, adds aggressiveness to the overall style. As Merrell says,
"It's just out there saying 'feed me air.'"
