reviews: Burgers on the Edge

Packed neatly between Kapahulu Avenue and the parking lot of Safeway, Burgers on the Edge offers adventurous hamburger fans the opportunity to create a personalized sandwich. With eight different cheeses, 13 sauces and 16 toppings to choose from, there is a burger to fit every taste.

Meanwhile, for those who prefer simplicity, there are several established “faves” to choose from including “The Classic,” which is topped with lettuce, tomato, red relish and pickles. But trying to concoct the absolute perfect combination is almost as much fun as actually eating the food.

That’s not to say that there is anything wrong with the food though. Unlike many other burger places, Burgers on the Edge offers Wagyu “Kobe Style” ground beef ($7.99 for 1/3 pound and $10.99 for 1/2 pound) in addition to the standard ground chuck hamburgers (6.99 for a 1/3 pound and $8.99 for 1/2 pound).

The Wagyu beef is savory, juicy and presents a pleasant change from the typical burger. Of course, whether it’s worth paying a little extra depends on how finicky of an eater you are.

The only real downside to so many choices is that the mounds of extras can turn the meat into an afterthought. For instance, in the Bacon, Barbeque, and Bleu burger, (Bacon, Barbeque sauce, Bleu cheese, Lettuce and Tomato) the bleu cheese has such a dominating flavor that everything basically becomes a Bleu cheese sandwich.

Cutting to the chase: Burgers on the Edge is just as good other competitors. The price is reasonable (for a non-fast food restaurant) and the taste is outstanding. Just be careful not to overdo the extras.
